Emotions

Experience, witness your emotions and distill the essence of their messages without acting or re-acting, until they have lost their compulsive aspect and only then you may chose to act. When the lions and elephants of raw emotions are tamed, we can change the world, riding on their backs in the direction they themselves wanted to go in, but were not able to reach without the guidance of their master.

The Dalai Lama was quoted on Facebook:  "We need to be clear, which emotions are harmful and which are helpful; then cultivate those that are conducive to peace of mind. Often, due to a lack of knowledge, we accept anger and hatred as natural parts of our minds. This is an example of ignorance being the source of our problems. To reduce our destructive emotions we strengthen the positive ones; such emotional hygiene can contribute to a healthier society."

With all respect, I believe his advice will not get the desired results, but may continue and even aggravate our problems.

It is a basic misconceptions to think that there is something wrong with the way we are constructed. Just as a fever is the body's way to take care of an infection, emotions are attempts to heal an underlying issue. Our system generates fever as it generates emotions, there is some sense in that, and we better discover it.

Emotions are very important pointers. Especially anger and hatred are like bad smells warning us of harmful things. We need to learn much in the way to manage our emotions. We  must master their energy rather than act out inflicting harm on others or ourselves in the process. This is undisputed!

But to reject emotions, especially the "bad ones" outright is doing us a great disservice and engages us in a never ending cycle of trying to do something impossible, constantly failing and not resolving any of the big underlying problems anyway. We need to distill their essence and understand them in their innermost core. Then our actions will be appropriate and can work miracles. Making certain emotions wrong and favoring other ones just creates confusion. What is the mind that it presumes the authority to judge life itself?

Emotions are patterns of energy moving in the body. The patterns stem from thoughts, the emotional energy is the response of the body to the thought. We need to sort out the mind and the masses of belief systems we so easily accept. On the mental level it is possible to discern harmful and harmless concepts. Emotions are just the interface of the mind with the body. They mirror. Trying to eradicate the human problem by blaming emotions is like trying to shatter the mirror because we don't like the image.
